So often, breakthrough jazz has been the direct product of a new collaboration. The strange chemistry that can occur between a soloman and his rhythm section, or a singer and her engineer, simply can't be predicted. The tracks in this set are about what happens when artistic minds meet. Whether it's guitarist Wes Montgomery riffing with Jimmy Cobb and Paul Chambers, or Thelonious Monk tricking out Duke Ellington, the sparks fly.

Candy Dulfer
On her latest LP, "Candy Store," the alto star continues to live up to the title of her 1990 debut, "Saxuality." Dulfer's tracks combine funky-fresh beats with a smooth jazzer's silky saxophone and combo cool. The results are at once breezy and hugely flirtatious.

Herbie Hancock
To call Hancock's stunning new collection of Joni Mitchell songs a "covers" set doesn't quite capture its spirit. The pianist has done what Joni might appreciate: he's responded to the tenor and theme of her songs, but not always the notes. The results are abstract, elegant, and ripe for extra listens.
