Images: Where particles, physics theories collide

The inner detector for the CMS experiment is shown here as it was being assembled in 2006 in a clean room specially designed to keep out air impurities. The CMS detector is comprised of 100 million individual detecting elements, each looking for signs of new particles and phenomenon.
