Before they could destroy rock 'n' roll, the Sex Pistols had to figure it out, and the landmark release of pre-"Bollocks" LP "Spunk" finds original guitarist Glen Matlock charging though bluesy classic-rock riffs--then gradually realizing he was allowed to blow them apart.
Sanctuary Records is pleased to announce the August 15th CD release of Spunk, the Sex Pistols' legendary bootleg album originally released in 1977. This timely release of Spunk coincides with the 30th Anniversary Edition of the Sex Pistols' very first demos, recorded in 1976.
The Sex Pistols pretty much destroyed everything that came before them - they were radical, they brought music back to its basic form of raw energy and angst. Suddenly everything else seemed so irrelevant. The Pistols were like discovering a new planet. In 1977 the punk generation held its breath as they waited for the highly anticipated release of the Sex Pistols debut album, Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols. To those in the know, the previous month had witnessed the bootleg release of an alternative and illegal Pistols studio debut album entitled Spunk. The latter featured the original classic line-up, featuring Glen Matlock (bass guitar), Steve Jones (guitar), Johnny Rotten (vocals), and Paul Cook (drums).
Spunk featured the original demos Glen Matlock recorded with the original line-up; he subsequently left the band before the Pistols went on to record Bollocks.
The demos which comprise Spunk originate from three recording sessions with recording engineer Dave Goodman. The first demos were recorded at the Denmark Street Rehearsal Rooms in London's Soho district during July '76. Tracks included "Seventeen,", "Satellite," "No Feelings," "Just Me (I Wanna Be Me)" and "Submission." A few weeks later overdubs were recorded at Riverside Studios in Chiswick, West London.
The second recording session took place at Wessex Studios in Highbury, North London, during October 1976, with an early take of "Anarchy in the UK."
The third and final recording session took place at Gooseberry Studios in London's Soho in January, 1977.It was during these final sessions where the band recorded the first takes of "God Save The Queen,", "Problems," "Pretty Vacant," "Liar," "Who Was It (EMI)" and "New York (Looking For A Kiss)." The songs were mixed at Eden Studios in Chiswick, West London.
Spunk is an ultra rare and must-have document of the Sex Pistols original line-up. Anyone who already possesses an original dog-eared copy of the Never Mind the Bollocks album in their record collection will find Spunk the perfect companion to vintage punk rock at its most anarchic.
The release of the Pistols' much sought after legendary bootleg, Spunk, marks the first time the album has been reissued in its original format, complete with spoken word audio clips in between the songs. The original 12" inch vinyl edition of this much-sought-after bootleg exchanges hands for up to $500.
