Editor's review

Dressing in drag is a time-honored rock 'n' roll tradition, with bands like the New York Dolls paving the way for high-heels-and-lipstick-wearing musicians to feel empowered, even sexy. There is, however, nothing sexy about the Grannies. The bandmembers look like Nick Nolte's mugshot if he had been dressed as the lady from "Mama's Family." They sound like it, too, and that is meant as a huge compliment.

Biography

Started in 1999 in San Francisco, CA by sludge-metal guitarist Sluggo (Ain't-SF, Hullabaloo-Boston) (AKA Grannihilator, Hockey Pants, Gran-o-War) and Dusseldorf screamer Dean (AKA Dini Dependrix, Dean-a-mite Allnite), the band quickly recruited (talked into joining) notorious drummer, Chris Pee (Ain't-SF, Hollow Heyday-Boston) (AKA Nasty Old bag, Shit One Pearl Two) and set about looking for a bassist. They found Scary Granny, a bass player extraordinaire and a personality somewhat less than ordinaire...Between visits to jail and illegal substances (He actually managed to get busted for Heroin in the soup aisle of a Safeway), Scary managed to stay with THE GRANNIES long enough to record their self-titled debut album (DT-001) w/ Bart Thurber (Oxbow, Neurosis. Strychnine...) and mix with Jack Endino. They put it out on their own start-up indie label, DEAD TEENAGER in December 2000. The resulting album got rave reviews, ("Killer songs, THE GRANNIES rule! Deal with it!" - Dawn Anderson/Editor BACKFIRE) and managed to confuse/piss off more than a handful of critics and soundmen across the country. They've shared the stage with the likes of Marky Ramone, Lopez, Bottles & Skulls, Dirty Power, Fleshies, The Hitch, Angry Amputees, Nuno Bettencourt (EXTREME)... but that’s another story…

Kicking Scary out as soon as the debut album was recorded, a replacement was found in the form of one Vinny Danger (AKA Dusty Tits). A Mexican who could hold more Jack Daniel's (AND play a full set) than the whole rest of the band put together...he quickly found his rightful place in this humble band of miscreants...THE GRANNIES second album (again recorded with Bart Thurber and mixed by Jack Endino) entitled Taste The Walker (DT-004) was released in February 2002 to (surprise) rave reviews, such as; "It turns out that these dress-wearing, booze-swilling, fire-starting nitwits might actually matter!" - John O'Neill/ SF Bay Guardian. They have hit the road repeatedly for 3 years now, and more and more people are being converted, or at least offering the band backstage sex. See what wearin' a dress will do for you?

THE GRANNIES released a 45 RPM 7” single March 2003 with “SORRY b/w TEENAGE KICKS” (DT-002) and began recording their next full-length album, “ERECTED LADY MAN” with Jack Endino at HANZSEK AUDIO, Seattle, WA October 2003. In most recent news, no one has died, but they have been kicked off their own label. Their lawyer has advised, "Don’t talk about it. Very much."

Cut to 2004 and THE GRANNIES release Erected Lady Man (WT-002) on their own NEW label, WONDERTAKER (www.wondertaker.com) to some great reviews;"My favorite punk’n’roll band on the planet right now."-peacedogman.com & "THE GRANNIES have absolutely THE worst gimmick in rock’n’roll" -sleazegrinder.com. Beefing up their already formidable forces THE GRANNIES added Buzzy Douchemore on second guitar and Dusty Tits was replaced on bass by a younger, more energetic Soggy T. Baggins. December 2004 saw Left-Handed guitarist Buzzy Douchemore break his back, be hospitalized for 10 days, have a 13 hour operation to put steel rods in his back, and he has not missed playing a Grannie performance! Its hard to get more punkrock than that I'd say. May 2005 will see the European release of Erected Lady Man on Triggerfish Records/Cargo just in time for a full European tour to commence in June 2005
