Even the best psychedelic rock and jam bands tend to use creative riffage as an excuse for unfocused rambling and weak vocals (Phish comes to mind). Neither problem afflicts LA's Quarter After, whose guitar lines sizzle in post-Hendrix fashion, and whose lyrics have a '60s-era, swinging London sense of harmony.
Brothers Rob and Dom Campanella lead the band. Like all great brotherly musical duos, they have a nearly telepathic rapport when it comes to writing and performing together. Nelson Bragg is the drummer. His incredibly solid groove locks the music in place, even when the band veer off into one of their lengthy psychedelic jams. Victor Penalosa replaced original bassist Dave Keonig (who's pictured on the album) a short while ago, and he brings to the band teen idol looks and a great deal of songwriting and performing experience. All four of ‘them make a beautiful racket together! Besides playing in the QA, Rob Campanella is an in-demand producer and engineer. He has worked with the likes of the Brain Jonestown Massacre (of which he's also an occasional member), the Tyde, Beachwood Sparks, the High Dials, Dead Meadow, Mia Doi Todd, and many, many more. Nelson Bragg is currently a member of Brian Wilson's touring band. He plays percussion and sings harmony vocals. He also plays drums in a terrible power pop band called the Mockers, and is currently in the middle of recording his first solo album, which as far as I know will not be called The Ballad of Nelson Bragg. Victor Penalosa works at Amoeba records and has many female admirers. Dom Campanella sounds uncannily like Gene Clark when he sings, and so far he doesn't mind when you tell him that. The band have already record nearly enough material for a new album, and plan a tour with the Brian Jonestown Massacre this summer to coincide with the release of their Bird Song release.
